The Dakota Territorial Museum, located in West Side Park, Yankton, SD, is owned and operated by the Yankton County Historical Society. The Society was formed in 1961 and the current museum built in 1971. Housing memorabilia of early Yankton and Dakota Territory days, including Native American Sioux (Lakota) Indian and Pioneer artifacts, the Museum offers visitors a glimpse into Yankton's rich pioneer history provided through period room exhibits, unique displays and a variety of outbuildings. In addition to the main museum building, outbuildings include the restored Gunderson Rural School House, the Great Northern Railway Depot and a retired Burlington Northern Caboose.

Board of Directors Meeting January 21, 2010.
All Board of Directors meetings are open to the public and are held at the Dakota Territorial Museum at 5pm.

Brown Bag Lunch January 15, 2010: “The Iron Horse and Yankton” By LouElla Machin
As the granddaughter of the Great Northern Railway Depot agent, Anton Luken, LouElla will share her knowledge of her family’s history with the depot, currently located at the Dakota Territorial Museum, and other railroad systems that helped shape Yankton’s past and secured its future. Brown Bag Lunches are held in the Dakota Territorial Museum Conference Room every 3rd Friday of each month. Presentations start at 12:10 and run to 12:50.

All Board of Directors meetings are open to the public and are held at the Dakota Territorial Museum at 5pm.

Brown Bag Lunch February 19, 2010: “Robert Kylius” By Karen Kubal Yankton native, Robert E. Kylius, was a bombardier with the 306th Bomb Group on a mission to bomb the U-boat pens at St. Nazaire, France when his plane was attacked and crashed over Brittany. Museum volunteer, Karen Kubal, will present the dramatic story of Kylius’ experiences with the French Resistance as he evaded capture by the Nazis. Brown Bag Lunches are held in the Dakota Territorial Museum Conference Room every 3rd Friday of each month. Presentations start at 12:10 and run to 12:50.

February 20, WNAX Exhibit will be opening at the Dakota Territorial Museum.
A social will be held for the exhibit opening on February 20 from Noon to 4pm.

Remembering One-Room Schools: Thursday, February 25
Book discussion “ONE-ROOM COUNTRY SCHOOL: South Dakota Stories” edited by Norma Wilson & Charles Woodard at the Yankton Community Library at 7pm . Copies of the book will be available for checkout at the library starting around February 1.

Remembering One-Room Schools: Tuesday March 9, at 7pm
Yankton College will host speaker Dr. Wayne Knutson from USD, Vermillion, who will talk about the “Legacy of One-Room Schools.” Presentation will be held at the Yankton College Alumni Hall at Yankton High School.

Brown Bag Lunch March 19, 2010: “The Historic Preservation Movement” By Jim Wilson
As someone who has been part of Historic Preservation for over 40 years, Jim has seen many changes, both good and bad, in the movement of Historic Preservation. He will share with us what impact it has had on society both locally and nationally. Jim has 30 yrs experience in historic preservation, 16 of that in SD State Historic Preservation Office, 6 yrs as City of Deadwood Historic Preservation Officer, 3 yrs in West Virginia State Historic Preservation Office and 5 yrs as a preservation consultant. Presently, he is Chair of the Clay County Historic Preservation Commission. Brown Bag Lunches are held in the Dakota Territorial Museum Conference Room every 3rd Friday of each month. Presentations start at 12:10 and run to 12:50.

Remembering One-Room Schools, Saturday March 27
The Dakota Territorial Museum will host a social at the museum on Saturday March 27, from Noon to 4pm. This social is open to all one-room school teachers and students. Come and share your favorite memories with fellow “one –room” alumni.
